British paratrooper killed by explosion in Ukraine, coroner rules

A coroner has officially ruled that Lance Corporal George Hooley, a 28-year-old British paratrooper, died from multiple injuries sustained in an explosion while assisting Ukrainian forces. The incident, which occurred on December 6, 2025, took place away from the front lines while Hooley was observing the testing of a new defensive capability. Hooley, who was from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, passed away in a Kyiv hospital three days later, marking the first death of a British service member in Ukraine since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. While the Ministry of Defence has maintained that the death was a tragic accident and not the result of hostile fire, the inquest—conducted partly in secret—highlights the ongoing, albeit limited, presence of British military personnel in the conflict zone. Hooley was widely remembered by his peers and commanders as an exceptional soldier and a 'born leader' who served with distinction across multiple international deployments, including in Afghanistan and Africa. His death has brought renewed attention to the delicate balance of the UK's support for Ukraine, as the government continues to navigate the risks associated with providing technical and security assistance in an active war theater. The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of the conflict, even for those operating in non-combat roles, as the war enters its fifth year with no clear resolution in sight.
