Porsha Williams Reveals Emergency Hysterectomy After Discovery of 21 Fibroids

Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams has opened up about a harrowing health crisis that culminated in an emergency partial hysterectomy earlier this year. The 45-year-old television personality revealed that what she initially dismissed as symptoms of perimenopause were actually the result of 21 uterine fibroids, one of which had grown to the size of a cantaloupe. By sharing her journey, Williams is now advocating for women to prioritize their health and resist the urge to self-diagnose.

A Sudden Discovery and Life-Saving Surgery

The path to surgery began unexpectedly when Williams accompanied a friend to a fertility appointment. While there, she decided to request an exam for herself, leading to an ultrasound that revealed a startling reality. Imaging identified 15 large fibroids, alongside endometriosis and complications with her uterine lining, prompting her doctor to schedule an MRI and subsequent surgery within just two weeks.

During the procedure in May 2026, surgeons discovered that the situation was even more severe than initial scans suggested, totaling 21 fibroids. While the surgery successfully removed her uterus, her ovaries were preserved. Williams has been candid about the emotional toll of the procedure, noting that she had to grapple with the finality of losing her ability to carry another child.

I woke up after the surgery and thought, 'A part of me is gone.' Fibroids aren't something we usually talk about as women, and neither are hysterectomies. There's a stigma to it, as if you're somehow less of a woman without your uterus.

The Dangers of Self-Diagnosis

Williams admitted that she had spent significant time misattributing her debilitating symptoms—which included severe fatigue, migraines, and heavy periods—to the natural onset of perimenopause. Her experience serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of normalizing chronic pain or assuming that age-related changes are the sole cause of physical distress. She is now urging her followers to seek professional medical evaluations rather than relying on their own assumptions.

The reality star emphasized that the surgery, while life-altering, was ultimately a necessary intervention that saved her life. Since the operation, she has reported a 100 percent improvement in her quality of life, with her previous symptoms of iron deficiency and bladder pressure significantly alleviated. She credits her seven-year-old daughter, Pilar, as her primary source of strength and purpose throughout the recovery process.

Addressing Health Disparities

The prevalence of uterine fibroids in the Black community is a well-documented public health concern that Williams' story brings to the forefront. Research indicates that by age 50, more than 80 percent of Black women will have ultrasound evidence of fibroids, a rate significantly higher than that of their white counterparts. Furthermore, Black women are statistically more likely to develop these growths earlier in life, with the tumors often being larger and more symptomatic.

By speaking out, Williams is contributing to a broader conversation about the necessity of medical advocacy and the importance of addressing reproductive health disparities. Her transparency regarding the stigma surrounding hysterectomies aims to dismantle the shame often associated with the procedure. She hopes that by sharing her vulnerability, she can empower other women to take charge of their bodies and demand the care they deserve.
